Pantaenius Boat Insurance: Cover, Costs, and Alternatives at a Glance
Pantaenius boat insurance consists of three separate contracts: yacht hull, yacht liability, and personal accident insurance for occupants. The hull cover is designed as all-risks cover, works with a binding agreed fixed value on a replacement-value basis, excludes the underinsurance objection, and pays for repairs without "new for old" deductions. Key limit: Pantaenius only waives reductions for gross negligence where the total loss does not exceed €10,000. There is no flat price – via NauticAssure you can request an individual Pantaenius quote and compare it directly with other boat insurers.
Pantaenius is one of the best-known specialists in yacht insurance. But what exactly do its hull, liability, and personal accident covers include? How binding is the agreed fixed value? And which limits should you know before signing up?
We took a close look at the Pantaenius Yacht Conditions and summarised the most important provisions in plain language.
Transparency note: This guide explains the English-language Pantaenius Yacht Conditions (PYC) marked 08/2018. Additional information from the German Pantaenius website is expressly identified as provider information. Via NauticAssure, quotes from Pantaenius, among others, can be requested and compared with other insurers. The terms actually agreed, the policy schedule, and any additional agreements always determine the cover.
What is Pantaenius boat insurance?
Under the name Pantaenius boat insurance, various covers for your own boat or yacht are offered. The terms reviewed contain three separate areas of cover:
| Insurance | What is it for? |
|---|---|
| Yacht hull insurance | Damage to and loss of the insured boat and co-insured items |
| Yacht liability insurance | Statutory liability claims for damage arising in connection with ownership and use of the insured boat |
| Yacht personal accident insurance | Agreed benefits for accidents in connection with using the boat, in particular in the event of disability or death |
The hull cover protects your own boat, while liability cover concerns claims by injured third parties. The accident insurance adds personal benefits. Important: these are separate contracts – a benefit is only covered if the corresponding element has actually been taken out.
Also of interest to owners who occasionally charter: under certain conditions, the yacht liability cover includes skipper liability for another yacht personally chartered or rented. However, this is not the same as a complete charter insurance package.
What does Pantaenius hull cover include?
In the terms reviewed, Pantaenius yacht hull insurance is designed as all-risks cover. It generally covers the risks the insured items are exposed to during the policy period, subject to the contractual exclusions and limitations. We explain how yacht hull insurance works in general in a separate guide.
Covered are the boat named in the policy schedule, its machinery, technical equipment, fittings, tenders, and accessories. Permanently associated cradles and a trailer named in the policy schedule are also part of the described scope. Personal belongings on board are co-insured up to €5,000 per claim.
Are winter storage, boatyard stays, and transport covered?
Hull cover also applies during usual periods out of the water, for example in winter storage or at a boatyard. Lifting out and launching are also covered.
For road and river transport and ferry transport of the boat on a trailer, the terms provide cover within Europe or within a correspondingly larger agreed cruising area. Among other things, a suitable means of transport is required.
Sea transport of the boat is subject to a special rule: here, under the stated conditions, the hull cover applies in addition to a separate transport insurance; that policy’s excess is not reimbursed.
Which additional costs does the hull cover pay?
In addition to the actual damage to the boat, the PYC contain several cost items that can become relevant after an incident:
| Benefit | Provision in the PYC reviewed |
|---|---|
| Salvage, assistance, and loss mitigation | Reimbursement of necessary or reasonable expenses as defined in the terms; not counted against the sum insured |
| Wreck removal and disposal | Reimbursement of necessary costs in addition to the sum insured |
| Assistance in an emergency | Up to €10,000, for example for towing to the nearest repair facility |
| Inspection after grounding | Reimbursement of the necessary inspection costs |
| Accommodation or return journey | Under certain conditions up to €5,000 in total if the boat becomes uninhabitable during a trip as a result of an insured loss |
The cost provisions therefore explicitly distinguish between salvage or loss mitigation and breakdown assistance where no insured damage to the boat is imminent.
For emergency assistance, delivery costs for fuel, oil, batteries, or spare parts can be covered, for example. The fuel and spare parts themselves are not covered under this item. For overnight stays, an additional limit of €150 per person per night for a maximum of seven days applies.
Does all-risks cover mean every loss is covered?
No. Pantaenius hull cover also contains exclusions.
For design, manufacturing, and material defects as well as normal wear, corrosion, rust, and electrolysis, damage to the directly affected part is generally excluded. Resulting damage to other insured parts, however, can be covered under the remaining terms. Further limitations concern, for example, osmosis, certain gradual weather effects, and losing loose items or items going overboard.
For theft, the circumstances matter too. For individual items, the terms require, for example, a break-in, a standard anti-theft device, or the described securing on the boat. Theft of the entire boat on a trailer not secured against theft is excluded.
How is machinery damage covered?
The machinery is one of the insured items. However, this does not amount to unrestricted machinery cover.
Under the basic terms reviewed, machinery damage is only covered if it results from certain causes. These include, for example, accident, fire, short circuit, lightning, explosion, force majeure, theft, and vandalism. A technical defect is therefore not covered simply because the engine belongs to the boat.
Additional provider information: on its German website, Pantaenius advertises an optional "Motorschutz Plus" (engine protection plus) for machinery up to ten years old. It extends cover to include material, design, and operating errors, among other things. Such an extension must be distinguished from the basic cover described and must be taken into account in the specific quote.
Agreed fixed value at Pantaenius: what is paid in a total loss?
The agreed fixed value is a key feature of Pantaenius yacht hull insurance.
The terms reviewed define the insured value on a replacement-value basis and treat the value set out in the policy schedule as the binding agreed insured value. The underinsurance objection is expressly excluded. In the event of an insured total loss, this agreed fixed value is generally used. This also applies to a constructive total loss, where the necessary repair costs exceed the agreed fixed value.
Pantaenius additionally explains on its German FAQ page that, because it is based on replacement value, the agreed sum insured cannot be contested in the event of a total loss.
Does an agreed fixed value automatically mean a payout without any deduction?
Not entirely. The binding valuation of the boat must be distinguished from other indemnity rules.
The PYC provide that any achievable residual value is taken into account in the indemnity. In addition, VAT is only reimbursed to the extent it was actually incurred for the chosen repair. If you are entitled to deduct input tax, VAT is not reimbursed.
The key distinction is therefore: no depreciation deduction because of the boat’s age does not mean that all other contractual calculation rules disappear.
How differently the agreed fixed value can be structured by different providers is shown, for example, in our guide to ADAC watersports insurance.
Does Pantaenius waive "new for old" deductions?
Yes. For insured partial losses, the necessary repair costs are reimbursed without "new for old" deductions under the terms reviewed.
If older components are replaced with new ones during an insured repair, no corresponding age deduction is made. However, the damage itself must still be covered. The clause does not, for example, turn an excluded wear-and-tear loss into an insured loss.
Gross negligence at Pantaenius: which limit applies?
The hull terms reviewed contain a limited waiver of benefit reductions for causing the insured event through gross negligence.
Where the total loss does not exceed €10,000, the gross negligence objection is not raised. For larger losses, the insurer can reduce its payment in proportion to the severity of the fault.
The reference figure matters: the €10,000 refers to the total amount of the loss. The clause does not promise that, for every larger loss, the first €10,000 will automatically be paid in full regardless of gross negligence.
Moreover, this rule concerns causing the loss. For breaches of contractual obligations, for example when reporting or investigating a claim, the PYC contain separate provisions. A blanket waiver of all consequences of grossly negligent behaviour cannot be derived from it.
When comparing rates, don’t just note "gross negligence covered" – also record the specific loss limit and what exactly the waiver applies to. Especially for high-value yachts, this difference can be significant in the event of a claim.
Which excess applies to Pantaenius hull cover?
In principle, the excess agreed in the policy schedule applies per claim. For damage to tenders, trailers, and cradles, the PYC reviewed specify a different excess of €300.
For various events, the excess does not apply. These include, among others:
- total loss of the insured boat
- burglary
- damage to personal belongings
- damage caused by fire or lightning
- a collision with the boat while moored that was caused solely by a third party
The excess also does not apply to the described benefits for transport, salvage and wreck removal, emergency assistance, inspection after grounding, and accommodation costs. A comparison based solely on the regular hull excess therefore does not fully reflect your actual share of costs.
What does Pantaenius yacht liability cover?
Yacht liability protects the policyholder and co-insured persons against statutory liability claims for personal injury, property damage, and financial loss in connection with ownership and use of the insured boat.
Co-insured persons include, among others, a different owner where applicable, as well as authorised skippers, crew members, and guests. Under the conditions described, this also applies to people using the associated tenders, watersports equipment, or diving gear.
The insurer examines the question of liability, defends unjustified claims, and pays justified claims to the agreed extent. The specific sums insured per event and the annual maximum are set out in the policy schedule. The terms reviewed do not state a uniform multi-million sum that applies to every contract.
Which additional liability risks are included?
The described scope includes certain water pollution damage and the use of associated watersports equipment and diving gear. Search and rescue costs caused by accidentally triggering certain distress equipment can also be covered, provided the costs are not reimbursed elsewhere. Trailer liability requires a separate agreement and further conditions.
Is there bad-debt cover?
Yes. The terms include bad-debt cover for certain personal injury and property damage where a third party is liable but the claim against them cannot be enforced.
This requires, among other things, an enforceable title or a corresponding notarised acknowledgement of debt. Enforcement must also have been unsuccessful or be futile. Losses under €1,000, intentionally caused damage, and cases where another party is primarily obliged to pay are excluded.
Claims between insured persons are not covered without restriction either. For example, the PYC exclude property damage and financial loss claims by the policyholder or owner against co-insured persons.
Is skipper liability included with Pantaenius?
The yacht liability cover reviewed includes skipper liability for the policyholder as a natural person when they personally charter or rent another boat and skipper it themselves. Non-commercial use is required; crew members are co-insured to the extent described.
If you charter regularly or don’t have your own yacht insured, you need standalone skipper liability insurance. When it’s worth it and what exactly it covers is explained in our guide Skipper liability insurance: when you need it.
Is damage to the chartered yacht covered?
Special conditions apply to damage to the chartered yacht or its equipment.
Under the PYC, this cover only applies to liability claims based on gross negligence. This must be established in the way described in the terms or confirmed by an agreement recognised by the insurer. An excess of €2,500 applies to such damage. There is therefore no blanket cover for all damage to the charter boat – that is what charter deposit insurance is for.
Is charter loss of income covered?
Justified claims for proven loss of income from subsequent charter trips can be covered up to €20,000.
Among other things, this requires that the affected charter contracts had already been booked and paid at the time of the loss, that switching to another yacht is not possible, and that the repair takes longer than three days.
This skipper liability is also expressly subsidiary to other insurance: it only pays where no benefit can be claimed under another insurance contract, in particular an existing watersports liability policy of the charter yacht.
What does Pantaenius personal accident insurance provide?
Personal accident insurance for occupants is a separately purchased area of cover. Under the PYC reviewed, it covers accidents in connection with using the insured boat and its tenders.
This includes, among other things, private trips and regattas, time spent in harbour, certain work on the boat, and shore leave of up to 48 hours. Swimming, snorkelling, diving, and using associated watersports equipment can also be covered in connection with using the boat.
Benefits for disability or death depend on the agreed sums insured. A lump-sum system applies: the agreed total sum is divided among the insured persons on board, capped by the agreed maximum per person. A high total sum insured is therefore not automatically the sum insured for each individual crew member.
Further benefits include search and rescue costs and accident-related medical transport costs, each with defined limits of up to €50,000. These additional cost benefits have their own conditions and rules on the priority of other parties obliged to pay; search costs are capped per vessel.
For an additionally chartered yacht, the accident insurance is narrower: the policyholder must skipper it themselves. Charter contracts of more than two weeks, commercial charter trips, and participation in regattas or races are excluded under this extension.
In which cruising areas does Pantaenius boat insurance apply?
For yacht hull and yacht liability, the cruising area agreed in the policy schedule generally applies. Blanket worldwide cover for your own boat cannot be derived from the PYC.
Occasionally and unintentionally exceeding the cruising area is covered, but must be reported to the insurer without delay. The insurer can charge a reasonable additional premium for this. For planned trips, you should therefore check in advance whether the entire route is covered by the contract.
The skipper liability and personal accident insurance described are different: here the terms generally provide worldwide scope, in each case within the defined cover and subject to the exclusions.
What does Pantaenius boat insurance cost?
There is no flat annual premium for Pantaenius boat insurance. The price is calculated individually for each boat and depends, among other things, on the hull sum insured, the desired liability cover, the cruising area, the type of use, the excess, and any add-ons such as Motorschutz Plus.
In the NauticAssure comparison calculator you can request an individual Pantaenius quote – and compare it directly with rates from other specialised boat insurers. This way you see not only what Pantaenius costs for your boat, but also how premium and cover compare with the market.

Enter your boat’s details in the NauticAssure boat calculator and receive an individual quote – with Pantaenius compared directly against other boat insurers.
Go to the boat calculatorFor a meaningful price comparison, quotes should be obtained on the same basis wherever possible: with the same hull sum insured, comparable liability cover, identical cruising area, and the same type of use.
The excesses and any additional agreements should also be compared side by side. A quote with additional machinery cover, for example, is not directly comparable with one that only includes the basic terms.
The key question is therefore not only "What does Pantaenius cost?" but also "Which benefits and limitations apply for exactly this premium?"
Who is the insurer behind Pantaenius?
For the yacht insurance products considered here, Pantaenius is not the same as the actual risk carrier.
According to its German legal notice, Pantaenius GmbH is registered as an insurance agent. The company develops its own cover concepts and implements them with individual insurers or insurer consortia.
The list of insurers as of September 2026 includes, for example, AIG Europe S.A. and Allianz Global Corporate & Specialty SE. However, this does not mean that these companies are automatically involved in every Pantaenius contract.
Which insurers carry the specific contract and how they participate is set out in the individual documents. Where several insurers are involved, the PYC provide for liability in proportion to their respective shares.
Comparing Pantaenius boat insurance: what matters?
A comparison should focus on the contractually promised benefits – not just the name of a feature. For a Pantaenius quote and possible alternatives, these questions are particularly useful:
| Comparison point | The key question |
|---|---|
| Agreed fixed value | How binding is the agreed insured value, and which other indemnity rules apply? |
| Repairs | Are there age deductions or special limits for individual components? |
| Gross negligence | Does the waiver apply in full or only up to a certain total loss amount? |
| Machinery | Which causes of damage are covered, and has an extension been agreed? |
| Salvage and emergency assistance | Which types of cost are covered, with which limits and excesses? |
| Cruising area and use | Do route, berth, private use, and any charter activities match the contract? |
| Skipper liability | Which damage to the charter boat is covered, and which insurance has to pay first? |
A meaningful comparison therefore doesn’t just set premiums side by side – it checks which cover suits the specific yacht and how it is used.

Under the PYC reviewed, the contract is concluded for one year. It renews for a further year each time unless cancelled in text form at least three months before the end of the policy year.
Special rules apply when the boat is sold: the contract ends when ownership is transferred. The insurer must be notified of this date, together with the purchase contract, so that a pro-rata premium refund can be calculated.
Thinking about switching? Get comparison quotes in the NauticAssure boat calculator well before the notice period ends, so there is no gap in cover between the old and new contract.
Summary
Pantaenius yacht hull insurance combines a binding agreed fixed value on a replacement-value basis with a waiver of "new for old" deductions and several cost benefits on top of the actual damage to the boat; for certain events and cost items, the excess also does not apply. At the same time, important limits remain: the waiver of reductions for grossly negligent causation only applies up to a total loss of €10,000, and under the basic cover the machinery is only insured against certain causes of damage. Whether the offer suits your yacht is best judged in a direct comparison – via NauticAssure you can request a Pantaenius quote and compare it with alternatives from other boat insurers.
