Yacht hull insurance explained: cover, insured value, and excess
Hull insurance covers damage to your own yacht – for example from storms, grounding, theft, or fire. What matters is the agreed insured value, the cruising area, and the excess. All-risks cover offers broader protection than cover limited to named perils.
For boat owners, the yacht is often the second-largest purchase after their home. Hull insurance protects that value – provided the cover and insured value match the actual risk.
What hull insurance covers
Hull insurance covers damage to your own yacht, for example from storms, collision, grounding, fire, or theft. Depending on the policy, salvage costs and wreck removal may also be included.
All-risks cover vs named perils
All-risks cover applies to any sudden, unforeseen event unless specifically excluded – offering the broadest protection. Named-perils policies, by contrast, only pay out for explicitly listed causes of loss.
Setting the insured value correctly
The insured value is the contractually agreed value of the yacht. If set too low, you risk being underinsured in the event of a claim; if set too high, you pay an unnecessarily high premium. Equipment such as sails, electronics, or a tender should be insured separately.
Excess and cruising area
A higher excess lowers the premium but should remain affordable in the event of a claim. The agreed cruising area – such as the Baltic, Mediterranean, or worldwide – must match actual use, since sailing outside the agreed area can jeopardise cover.
| Component | Covers | Typical exclusions |
|---|---|---|
| Hull insurance | Damage to your own yacht | Wear and tear, gross negligence |
| Liability | Damage to third parties | Own damage |
| Salvage costs | Salvage after an accident | Salvage without an insured event |
